We recently had the pleasure of visiting Big Creek Lumber’s sawmill, over coffee, donuts, and friendly faces, we got a behind-the-scenes look at how this family-run company has been managing forests, milling lumber and serving California communities since 1946.
A Legacy of Stewardship
Founded by the McCrary family with a portable sawmill and just a few acres after WWII, Big Creek has grown thoughtfully over the years. We heard from several long-time team members, including Anthony Marin (Branch Manager in Santa Cruz), Mandy Russell (Sales Manager in Watsonville), Alex Walker (Operations Manager), and Jim Busick (Wholesale Sales), who’s been with the company for over 40 years. Marketing Manager Michelle Webb walked us through Big Creek’s history, mission, and their new mobile app that helps customers easily quote, check inventory, and make payments.
Forestry That Puts the Forest First
Big Creek pioneered sustainable forester and has long practiced selective harvesting — a sustainable method that supports natural regrowth and forest health. Their team of Registered Professional Foresters works closely with agencies like CAL FIRE and Fish & Wildlife, as well as environmental experts, to ensure every harvest is done with care.
During our visit, CLCA members got to see Big Creek’s sawmill in action — where logs are transformed into quality lumber with precision and care. From the head rig slicing through redwood logs, to the sorting and grading line where each board is carefully evaluated, it was clear that craftsmanship and efficiency go hand-in-hand here. We also saw how every part of the log is used — bark, chips, and sawdust are all repurposed, reinforcing Big Creek’s commitment to sustainability at every step.
As the late co-founder Bud McCrary said, “Our legacy is our forests.”
